Is HeatX 100% solid epoxy or something different?

HeatX is absolutely not an epoxy. HeatX is a nanocomposite proprietary polymeric formulation. It consists of a Part A and Part B which are mixed to form the polymer.

What is the basic chemical used and the process for use?

HeatX is a two part, water-based polymer coating. For use, mix on site and apply within three days  (Pot life of 72 hours+ after mixing). HeatX air-cures in under two hours (typically in 45 minutes).

What is the process to apply HeatX?

  • Applicator uses projectiles / mini pigs to push a slug of fluid down each tube.
  • Applicator uses spray coater to coat fins. Multiple applications are used to build up to desired coverage.
  • Pig-application is the preferred method to prevent wasted coating but any method is possible.

Steps involved in the applications:

  1. Clean tubes of process fluids and material deposits including fouling and corrosion.
  2. Using pigging method, apply coating in layers, drying between/ spray coat to apply coating in layers.
  3. build up coating to desired coverage.
  4. Final dry time (approx. 45 minutes).
  5. QC.

What is the pre-treatment cleaning/surface preparation method?

Tubes must be cleaned of residual process fluids and all loose material including fouling and corrosion. Grit blasting or hydro blasting to remove residue and loose material in tubes.

Is HeatX applied at ambient temperatures?

Yes.

What is the optimal thickness of HeatX coating?

Desired total thickness is 1-2 mil.

How many coats are required?

We recommend two or more coats. Typical thickness should be approximately 2 mil.  HeatX is much faster to cure than a traditional epoxy coating, so will take far less time to apply.

What is the heat transfer resistance of HeatX?

Observations show no significant change in heat transfer resistance.  <2-3% change in thermal diffusivity (minimal heat transfer resistance due to thin coating).

What is the mechanical strength of HeatX?

<5% mass loss at sand particle impact of 70 m/s (ASTMG76).

What is the bonding strength of HeatX?

5A adhesion (ASTM D3359).

What is the colour of the HeatX coating?

Standard HeatX is clear, but is controllable so can be tuned to whatever colour is required by the customer.

What is the shelf life of HeatX?

Six months stored as part A/part B, 72 hrs once mixed.

What is the typical expected lifespan of HeatX in service?

HeatX’s expected life is 5+ years.

In trials, we have verified 24 months+ so far. (Note that for this seawater exchanger, normal intervention is once every few months, but with HeatX application we have demonstrated steady performance for 24 months now)

What is the curing time required and at what temperature?

~1hr with good airflow at room temperature.

What is the post treatment required after coating?

The coating must be allowed to air dry completely before service is resumed.

What are the QA tests or inspection methods are used to ensure uniformly after coating?

Boroscope, profilometry is preferred.  Refinery and Power Plant HeatX customers have been using boroscope primarily. When it comes to coatings, holidays are considered, but in this case note that HeatX is a surface treatment, not a coating in the traditional sense.

Can HeatX be applied at site or is the bundle required to be shifted to your workshop?

Both are possible. On-site or workshop application is possible. Both brand new and in-service bundles can be coated.

Is this coating applied by a local crew or will a remote crew be needed?

Oceanit works with local partners. HeatX can also be applied by a local crew.

Can the coated tubes be recoated after few years?

Yes, the tubes can be grit blasted again (based on customer needs) and prepped for recoating.

What is the time required for coating one tube in this exchanger and what will be the total time for the complete exchanger?

Each tube will need several applications but a single pass takes only minutes. The total application time will depend on the size of the exchanger, but typically the entire process can be completed in 1-2 days to allow dry time between coats.

Is there a MSDS?

Can HeatX handle seawater?

Absolutely. HeatX , excels at repelling biofouling from seawater.

What is the minimum diameter of tube that can be coated?

As long as the line can be pigged or flooded, there is no functional minimum due to the 2 mil. thickness of HeatX.

Can HeatX be applied in U tubes?

Yes, as long as the application pig can navigate the bend or the pipe owner can flood the line.

Can we apply HeatX in used tubes?

Yes, as long as they are properly cleaned prior to coating.

Can this be applied after completion of the retubing process?

Yes.
